Dog meat sold on the market (Cao Bằng , Vietnam)

This photo is part of a series called Thịt chó: eating a (hot) dog. A lots of interesting comments and reactions have been posted on the various photo sites where this series has been published.

WARNING: These images are graphic, not suitable for kids and people with a weak stomach!

Western culture considers that eating a dog is cruel, barbaric and disgusting (not illegal, though), but ironically we have no problem eating all other sorts of animals as long as they are not called pets.

But for the vast majority of people on earth, cultural values are very different. Dog meat is considered a delicacy in some asian cultures, and indeed cooked dog meat is very tasty and protein rich. You should try it some day! (if you are not vegetarian)

"Food dogs" are not pets and they have no names. They are bred and raised in farms, just like pigs, cows, lambs, chickens and other farm animals. They are usually put down "humanely" just like any other farm animal, by slitting the throat and bleeding the animal until it passes out. However some disturbing cases of food dogs being tortured before being slaughtered have been documented.

This series of photos shows the process involved in preparing a dog for dinner, from slautering to cutting-up, eviscerating, de-boning, cooking and of course eating! These photos were taken in Bac Ha, a small town in the Northern part of Vietnam, and in various markets of the region.

In case you are wondering, I did not order the dog for dinner, I just stumbled on the scene in the street and documented it, since I had my camera.

> Your non-chalant attitude about eating dog meat disgusts me. if you are non-chalant about eating beef (e.g. burgers), you should go to india, where eating beef is a federal crime that will put you in jail for a long time. yet most people in western countries are noin-chalant about eating beef because it's ok in their culture.
i am sure that there are abuses occuring (and i have seen video of animal being tortured), but the dogs that i seen being slaughtered were not beaten, they were slaughtered the exact same way pigs are slaughtered. and i witnessed goats being slaughted in turkey (where goat meat is the most common meat), and they were slaughtered the same way, too. calling a photo-journalist a "horrible human" is a bit like shooting the messenger. i am glad i took those photos, even if some people do not like what they show. i don't know if adrelanine tastes any good, i never had any in my meat.
Your non-chalant attitude about eating dog meat disgusts me. Please do your research, these dogs are not "Put down humanely". On the contrary, the belief is the more adrenaline that surges throughout the animals' body before death, the better the taste and the more better the ability to reproduce and be fertile for those who eat the dog. Do you know how adrenaline occurs mr. "photographer"? Usually by torture including any or all of the following; beating, electrocution, hanging and beating, combine any of these and you will have the "humane method" in which most dogs in asia are "put down". What a horrible photo and what a horrible human being you are. Bleh.
